Welcome Back, Volunteers!
posted October 2009
On August 29th, we kicked off our 2009-10 build season. Even with temperatures over 100 degrees, we had dedicated volunteers out on site helping us make dreams come true for families.
This year we are building in Phoenix, Avondale, Surprise and Glendale. We are continuing our work at Oro Vista, our subdivision near 16th Street and Baseline and Johnson Townhomes, our two-story townhome subdivision in Surprise. After moving dirt in Avondale all summer, we have officially started three homes to kick off our newest subdivision, Hillcrest Village, which will house 37 total families when complete. Three more homes are scheduled to start in January along with another new subdivision, Palmaire Courts in the heart of Glendale.
In an effort to grow our leadership team, we held two separate trainings in Peoria and Phoenix. There were over 45 new and veteran volunteers who attended the trainings. All of the trainees have been assigned to a house this fall. We also held a Site Host training, in which we continue to look for volunteers to greet and sign in volunteers in the morning.
The ReStores kept busy all summer with volunteers, including many students using their extra time to sort, organize and work in one of the three locations in Phoenix, Mesa or Peoria. We continue to recruit volunteers to work in the ReStores. With the busy season starting again, the office volunteers are returning and gearing up for more data entry and other projects the administrative staff can use help with.
We thank all of our volunteers for their continued support and commitment to Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona. We’re excited for another amazing season of constructing brighter futures, one family at a time!

Carpenter’s Circle Annual Appeal
posted October 2009
At the Heart of the Mission
Home construction and renovation is the core of the Habitat mission. Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity has partnered with donors, corporations, volunteers and faith partners in the Metro Phoenix area to fund and build simple, decent and affordable housing for families with low to moderate incomes. Today, the dream of home ownership has become a reality for 739 Habitat families.
The Problem
Even with the market slow-down, homeownership is still far out of reach for Habitat families. The median price of a Phoenix area existing single-family home at the end of 2008 was $191,300. Habitat families cannot qualify for a mortgage that requires a
10-20% payment, a 6.4% interest rate and a monthly payment of more than $1,200. They would have to earn close to $60,000 a year in order to purchase a home in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. The majority of Habitat families earn less than $30,000.Funding the Dream
“Gifts received from the Annual Campaign are critical to the mission because they work hand-in-hand with our home sponsorship program,” says Board Chair Frederick Lake. “While support of the home sponsorship program pays for the ‘sticks and bricks’ of construction, Campaign gifts help support land and land development related costs.
“For example, the costs for purchasing and developing land continue to be comparable to the costs of actual home construction. Carpenter Circle gifts help pay for building permits, roads and utilities. In years past, Habitat could expect costs for land and infrastructure to be a minimal portion of the total cost of building. Today, and even in this economy, costs average close to $85,000 on a build.
“The gifts from this appeal will help us fund these necessary expenses, which are now about half the cost of a Habitat build but are not included in the home sponsorship program,” says Lake.
Community Partners
“Habitat for Humanity has an outstanding group of dedicated and generous supporters,” says Lee Mashburn, Annual Campaign Chair. “During the month of October, team members will contact many of Habitat’s existing donors to thank them for their ongoing friendship, support and generosity. They will also ask them to pledge their continuing support.
“This is a great opportunity for members of the Board of Directors,” says Mashburn. “We’ve asked the board and several key volunteer leaders to help with the Carpenter’s Circle Campaign. They will have the opportunity to speak with donors and say thank you. But, before making calls to raise money, each of them will lead the way by making their personal gift to the campaign.”
Every Gift Matters
Thousands of Arizona families are struggling to transition from overcrowded, substandard and sometimes unsafe shelter to simple, decent and affordable homes. As Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona moves forward, it will continue to provide solutions to the affordable housing crisis in the Metro Phoenix area.
There has never been a greater need for support. And, every gift is important, regardless of size. Carpenter’s Circle gifts provide the steady financial support that keeps Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona moving forward every day of the year.
Please consider this sincere invitation to pledge your Carpenter’s Circle support today.

We need appliances 10 years or newer in good working order. We also would love furniture. Donations help further the Habitat mission.
