Glendale's Renovation Project
posted March 2010
BeforeHFHCAZ is please to announce that we are the recipient of $600,000 in Neighborhood Stabilization Program Grant funding from the City of Glendale. The funds will be used to acquire and renovate up to 5 single family, vacant and foreclosed homes within the targeted redevelopment areas of the City of Glendale.
AfterIn 2008, HFHCAZ began renovation services in response to a large inventory of vacant, foreclosed homes within the communities we serve. We began with two pilot projects that served as the base for our renovation activities. The projects were highly successful and since then, HFHCAZ has developed a modified construction model outlining renovation activities. Activities include:
- • Removing walls and old flooring
- • Replacing roofs
- • Adding patios
- • Renovating kitchens and bathrooms
- • Installing energy star appliances
- • Installing energy efficient heating and cooling systems
- • Replacing windows
The new Glendale project will provide great volunteer opportunities over the next several months. We will begin acquiring the properties in March and renovations will continue through September. We will be seeking qualified homeowners who will participate in the renovation activities by volunteering at least 100 hours of "sweat equity" time.
HFHCAZ appreciates the great partnership we have with the City of Glendale, our many volunteers and community supporters.
The Rosie on the House Handiest Woman Contest
posted March 2010
The Rosie on the House Handiest Woman Contest called upon two special Habitat volunteers to help review its projects and judge the entries. HFHCAZ thanks it long time volunteers Yung Cossar Koprowski and Jayne Leatherwood, two of HFHCAZ's handiest women, for their research and review of the 18 entries.
This year a kitchen makeover took the 1st Place honors at the Handiest Woman Contest. All contestants received “Marie’s Home Improvement Guide” written by Marie Levesque Leonard. If that middle name looks familiar to you, there is a reason. Marie is the daughter of HFHCAZ's long-time Habitat volunteer Romeo Levesque.
