Summer Team Leader in Training Classes
posted June 2009
The 2008-09 build year has been a great year for Team Leader recruitment. We launched our Team Leader in Training (TNT) program in October and held our second session in February. We’ve seen some great, new Team Leaders come through the program.
With the new build year upon us, HFHCAZ will be launching our first TNT program for the 2009-10 build season. We will be conducting these classes out of the Peoria office in an effort to recruit new leaders for our West Valley projects. HFHCAZ will be building in Avondale, Surprise and Glendale this coming build year.
The TNT program is made up of two classes conducted on consecutive Saturdays. The classes will be on:
• Saturday, July 25, 2009 / 9:30 A.M.-10:30 A.M.
• Saturday, August 1, 2009 / 9:30 A.M.-10:30 A.M.
Once the classes are completed, prospective Team Leaders will be assigned to shadow a House Leader on a specific construction site.
The TNT program is open to any HFHCAZ volunteers over the age of 16 who have a strong desire to learn leadership skills and who are committed to the Habitat mission. No construction experience is needed. To sign up, please contact volunteer services by clicking here.
A New Playground in Oro Vista
posted June 2009
One of the beautiful things about Habitat is the new opportunities homeownership presents the children of Partner families. Many of the children in Oro Vista will have their own bedroom for the first time. They will also enjoy a safe neighborhood area to play in.
Located in the center of the community is a brand new playground. There is a sand-filled play area, with a ladder and slide. Benches provided parents a place to sit while watching their children and visiting with neighbors.
The playground equipment is designed for children ages 5 to 12, and will accommodate the expected 80 Oro Vista children. The playground will provide recreation exercise and social interaction.
With the goal of making of Oro Vista a "Green Community," all materials used in the project are made from 100% recycled materials and were ordered from a local member of the US Green Building Council.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped to assemble the playground.
Board & Staff Build Day
posted June 2009
On May 2nd, Habitat’s staff and board members came together to volunteer on a house being sponsored and built by Discover Financial Services.
"Working side-by-side with the Mabrahtu family reinforces why the work of Habitat is so important. It’s the mission of Habitat that motivates me and the entire staff everyday," said Karen Tremper, Chief Development Officer.
“Every decision we make as a Board is based on the mission of Habitat. Today we had the opportunity to volunteer on the build site to support the mission hands-on,” said Lee Mashburn, Co-Chair of the Habitat Board.
Many thanks to Discover Financial Services for setting aside one of their build days to allow Habitat staff and board to participate in a build day this year. We would also like to extend a thank you to Ed Banas and his team for their leadership, direction and patience.
