Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project Vietnam 2009
posted January 2010
From November 15-20, 2009, The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project united volunteers and families in need of decent, affordable housing in the Mekong region. During the week-long build, volunteers built with nearly 166 families in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and China's Sichuan Province.
Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona participated with a home sponsorship in Vietnam at the fishing village of Dong Xa. Representatives from HFHCAZ included Board of Director members, Darcy Rose, Karen Stone, Gil Rodriguez, and volunteer Larry Woodruff. Larry Gudis and Missie D’Aunoy were key participants in helping coordinate the trip for HFHCAZ representatives. In total, over 300 volunteers from the U.S., New Zealand, Korea, China, and Vietnam affiliates helped build 40 homes in the Dong Xa fishing community located approximately 1 ½ hours southeast of Hanoi.

Vietnam is one of the poorest countries in Asia, so the need for decent housing is tremendous. Many of the families in Dong Xa village live in cramped conditions on fishing boats, or in overcrowded houses with little sanitation or electricity. The Vinh family are now the new homeowners of the HFHCAZ sponsored home. Mr. & Mrs. Vinh support their family of five by fishing on the nearby Thai Binh River. Mr. Vinh suffers from hepatitis, which makes life on the river difficult, and there is no medical care available nearby. A new house means more than just a place to live. It will allow the family to stay together while the children get an education. Mr. Vinh will also be closer to medical care, which will improve his family’s overall living conditions.
The week was packed with hard-work that needed to be skillfully coordinated among team leaders, volunteers and family partners. Ten volunteers worked diligently along with Vinh family members at an accelerated and enthusiastic pace to complete the home on time. Highlights during the week, included a site visit by former President Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter on November 18th, and was followed by a donor appreciation event that evening in Hanoi. The week ended with a dedication of a completed home, and a traditional tea ceremony performed by the homeowners to show their appreciation.
