Palmaire Kickoff
posted February 2010
On January 8, 2010 we received the permits and began digging the first two homes in the Palmaire Court subdivision in Glendale, Arizona. The wall raising took place for these two homes on Saturday, February 6th. Working alongside families, Habitat volunteers and staff plan to complete these homes in 18-20 weeks.
When completed there will be a total of 11 homes. These homes are two-story duplexes - meaning they are connected at the garage in pairs (five units and one single home). They have three bedrooms with the option of building a fourth bedroom. There is a total of 1,443 livable square feet. Habitat will apply for LEED Certification for each of the homes. Jenny Norton and Bob Ramsey will be providing the funds necessary to LEED Certify this development. American Solar has agreed to donate solar panels for each of the 11 homes in Palmaire.
Haiti Disaster Response Effort

posted February 2010
On January 12, 2010 an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. Many of the building structures and homes were destroyed leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless and without food. Before the disaster Haiti was overcrowded with makeshift homes built on the hillsides around the city. Lacking construction standards was a contributor to the devastation presented in the aftermath of the quake. Habitat has begun to respond by addressing immediate relief efforts and long-term shelter solutions for low-income families. Based on current information and past experience with international disasters, Habitat is planning a multiphase strategy that includes early recovery and mid- and long-term responses.
